A group of unknown assailants fired at a police patrol on the Alexandria Desert Highway in front of Abou-Saleh village, Beni Suef, killing a policeman and injuring two more.
The attackers sprayed bullets at the patrol from a small pick-up vehicle before the other side fired back. Police officer Ramadan Mohamed was killed, succumbing to his lethal injuries.
The two injured policemen were admitted in the Police Hospital, while the culprits are still at large.
Beni Suef security head, General Attia Mazrou, sent more patrols on the Desert Highway to locate and arrest the unknown perpetrators.
Attacks on police stations, checkpoints and patrols have become increasingly common since the January 25 Revolution.
Some people pin the periodic attacks on the law enforcers on payback for Egypt's central security forces’ brutal approach to nip the revolution in the bud in January and February. During the the 18-day revolt security and law enforcement used live ammunition at peaceful protesters in the early days of the uprising.
