Following a week-long strike and daily protest action by workers and students, the management of the American University in Cairo (AUC), has agreed to meet the main demands of the protesters. Initially, AUC President Lisa Anderson refused to negotiate with student and workers representatives, which further inflamed the situation.

But on Monday evening the AUC issued a statement in which it announced:

"The American University in Cairo reached an agreement today with the Independent Syndicate representing AUC custodians, landscape workers, and security guards, and with the Student Union representing students. The agreement provides better salaries and employment conditions for workers, more transparency on processes and procedures affecting the AUC community, and more opportunities to engage students in the University’s annual budget process."

The AUC management further pledged to "provide the AUC community, including students, with a detailed version of the University budget."
