Two alleged militants were killed and four policemen were seriously injured in a shootout in Damietta, East of Nile Delta, on Monday, head of the Damietta Security Directorate Faisal Doweidar told Al-Ahram Arabic news website.

The injured policemen included the deputy head of the Damietta Security Directorate.

Police were deployed after the Damietta Security Directorate received information that the militants were hiding out at a villa in Ras El-Bar.

According to Doweidar, heavy gunfire was heard as soon as forces arrived at the scene.

The militants, reportedly part of a Helwan-based terrorist group, were suspected of killing eight policemen in Helwan, South of Cairo, in May.
