Egypt’s Grand Imam Ahmed El-Tayeb has condemned the attack on a church in the southern governorate of Aswan and urged the Egyptians to maintain national unity.
In a statement released today, El-Tayeb also warned Egyptians of conspiracies that seek to create cracks in the relationship between Egypt’s Muslims and Copts conducted by the country's domestic and foreign enemies.
He also called for swift and severe punishment for all those who try to sow sectarian tension in the country.
Sectarian strife has cast a shadow on Egypt for years, with the issue brought to light by the New Year's bomb attack on the Two Saints Church in Alexandria, which killed 24 amd injured more than 100. The latest attack took place last Friday when Muslim extremists burned down the 71-year-old Mar Girgis church in Merinab village in the city of Edfu, located in the southern Aswan governorate of Egypt.
