They were arrested on January 14

A Cairo court ordered the release of the Doctors Syndicate freedoms committee member Taher Mokhtar and his roommates Hossam El-Din Hamed and Ahmed Hassan on Wednesday on EGP 5,000 bail, the Association for Freedom of Thought and Expression said on Facebook.

Mokhtar was arrested with his roommates Hossam El-Din Hamed and Ahmed Hassan on 14 January at their apartment in Downtown Cairo on accusations of inciting protests ahead of the fifth anniversary of the 25 January Revolution. They denied the accusations.

Their detention has been renewed since then.

The prosecution said they possessed "posters that call for protesting and overthrowing the government.”

However, Mokhtar's lawyer said that he only possessed union documents about the medical conditions of jailed doctors and prisoners rights to decent healthcare.

A campaign highlighting Mokhtar’s history of activism in the medical sector by human rights organisations and public figures had called for his release.
