The military prosecution will be the only authority tasked with investigating Sunday’s bloody clashes between the army and Coptic protesters in Cairo’s Maspero district, according to General Adel El-Morsi, head of the military judiciary.

In a statement issued on Thursday, El-Morsi said that all inquires made by public prosecutors would be handed over to their military counterparts. He stressed that investigations would be conducted fairly and would grant the accused all due legal rights.

The head of the military judiciary also called on those who had documents or evidence in their possession that might aid investigators to hand such materials over to the military prosecution. El-Morsi also stated that results of the investigation should not be disclosed by any of the parties involved in it.  

The general prosecution has already begun questioning more than two dozens detainees suspected of involvement in Sunday's violent attacks outside the Maspero broadcasting building in downtown Cairo, while the prosecutor-general has ordered autopsies on victims’ bodies.

On the night of the clashes, Minister of Justice Mohamed El-Guindy had said that the military prosecution would conduct investigations into the violence, stressing that guilty parties would face military, rather than civilian, trials.

Detainees face charges of disturbing public security, inciting sectarian strife, using unlicensed firearms, attacking security personnel and murder.
