The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) has officially appointed Tharwat ‎Mekki as the new chairman of the State Radio and Television Union. ‎

Mekki was vice president of the union and has been acting as chairman since Sami ‎El-Sherif stepped down a couple of months ago.‎

The decision was made in the wake of a wave of fierce criticism against the ‎government-run media, which many believe was biased towards SCAF while covering ‎last week’s deadly clashes between army forces and Coptic protesters in Maspero.‎
