A government vehicle carrying two deans of Mansoura University rammed into a student demonstration in the university grounds protesting against university president elections procedures on voting day.

The vehicle, carrying the deans of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the Faculty of Arts, was trapped by student protesters who blocked its passage so as to prevent the deans, previously appointed and refusing to resign, from participating in voting.

After around half an hour of being blocked by the protesters, the car drove into the protest, pushing and shoving students as it passed. Tens of students were injured and many other students, mostly females, fainted in the ensuing panic.

The president of Mansoura University resigned last week upon protests by students and university professors, as part of a nationwide university movement to replace, via elections, university leaders appointed by the old regime. Some of the university's faculty deans, who were appointed prior to the revolution, refused to resign and so elections could not be held to replace them.

During the summer, Essam Sharaf's Cabinet issued a draft decision to remove all university leaders and carry out academic elections, but the draft was not ratified by the ruling military council, and elections were only possible for the positions of those who voluntarily resigned, or those whose term had ended, which led university professors, supported by students, to hold protests and strikes to pressure university heads into stepping down.
