Nasserist party withdraws from influential alliance after Muslim Brotherhood puts its candidates at bottom of list

The Nasserist Karama Party on Wednesday announced its decision to withdraw from the Democratic Alliance coalition, stating that its members would run in upcoming parliamentary polls on a separate electoral list.

Shady El-Togry, a member of the party’s youth committee, told Ahram Online that the party is currently in the process of drawing up its own electoral lists. He stressed that the party had ample time to forge new electoral alliances in the run-up to parliamentary elections slated for late next month.

El-Togry attributed the party’s decision to an insistence on the part of the Muslim Brotherhood – which leads the coalition – on putting the Karama Party at the bottom of the coalition’s electoral list.

The move follows several other recent high-profile defections from the Democratic Alliance, by, for example, the liberal Wafd Party and Salafist parties.
