Egypt’s Armed Forces have distributed one million food boxes to citizens in Upper Egypt and Sinai, the military spokesman said on Wednesday.

In a statement on its official Facebook page, the army's spokesman said that the distribution of food supplies came under the directives of President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi in coordination with the ministry of supply.

"The army had distributed one million food boxes last week in different governorates and now it has distributed eight out of the eight million food boxes that were prepared to be sold to citizens at a reduced price of EGP 25, nearly half of its actual cost," the statement added.

Earlier this month, the Egyptian army announced it would deliver eight million food boxes, the largest quantity of food supplied by the govrnment to date at reduced prices nationwide in a bid to help citizens survive current economic hardships.

The move is aimed at "easing the burden on citizens and helping to create a decent life for them," the army's statement said.

Each box contains basic goods such as packs of sugar — of which the county has been facing a supply shortage since last month — rice, beans, margarine, tea and tomato sauce.

Egyptians have suffered from soaring food prices in recent months amid a foreign currency crisis.
