Parade of patriotism for a big flag

Egyptian military rulers just hoisted an Egyptian flag, apparently the “highest in the world,” at the Gezira district in Cairo.

The flag flies at the height of 176 metres and measures 12 by 15 metres. The ceremony marks the 38th anniversary of the 1973 military triumph over Israel and was sponsored by the Commercial International Bank (CIB).

The event, which was broadcast live on television, was preceded by a poem about Egypt. The Egyptian national anthem played while the flag was slowly raised.

The current highest flag, hoisted in Azerbaijan last year, flies at a height of 162 metres.
