Police raided a number of unlicensed outdoor cafes in Cairo’s El-Nozha area on Tuesday morning, two days after a young man was killed at a popular Heliopolis restaurant after a row about his bill.

Prosecutors on Monday ordered a waiter at Keif restaurant be detained for four days pending investigations, following the killing of 24-year-old Mohamed Bayoumi at the restaurant on Sunday.

The restaurant owner and two other employees were also arrested and are in police custody.

Sources told Ahram Online that initial investigations showed the victim was struck following a row with the restaurant owner over the cheque, after the latter ordered that the doors of the restaurant be closed and customers be barred from exiting until they had settled their bill.

The row occurred after the conclusion of the African Cup of Nations final, which was being broadcast in the café.

Bayoumi, a recent graduate with a business degree, died of his injuries on Sunday. He was buried in his hometown of Mansoura.

The killing of the young man, who was watching the football match with his fiancée that night, stirred an outcry on social media.

Shortly after the incident on Sunday evening, the restaurant closed down its social media accounts, and the restaurant itself was shuttered on Monday.
