Diplomatic sources have ruled out any possibility of Egypt recalling its ambassador in Damascus, despite the Arab League’s decision to suspend Syria’s membership.
At an extraordinary meeting of foreign ministers held in Cairo on Saturday, the Arab League decided to suspend Syria's membership until it implements a peace plan agreed upon by the 22-member organisation.
The League called for the withdrawal of Arab envoys from Damascus and settled on economic and political sanctions. However, it seems that Egypt will keep its ambassador in place. On Sunday, Algerian Foreign Minister Mourad Medelci announced that Algeria will not withdraw its ambassador from Syria because the League suspension is only temporary and may be lifted between now and 16 November.
