An Alexandria misdemeanor court sentenced on Tuesday the former director of Alexandria Library Ismail Serag El-Din to three years and six months in prison for squandering public funds by renting library facilities to outside contractors below market prices.
The court also handed the financial department director of the library two separate six-month prison sentences for fixing insurance documents for workers employees and shop rental prices.
The court also sentenced two other library employees to six months in prison on the same charge of fixing shop rental prices.
The defendants can appeal the verdict.
Serag El-Din served as the director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the new Library of Alexandria, from its inauguration in 2002 until May 2017.
