Egypt's Grand Mufti Shawki Allam has denounced the terrorist attack on a Shia mosque in Herat, Afghanistan, on Tuesday which killed 30 worshippers and injured dozens.

In a statement on Wednesday, the senior Sunni cleric warned the people of Afghanistan against falling into the trap of sectarian strife from these attacks, which terrorist and extremist groups commit to divert attention from the battle against them.

Allam expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and the people of Afghanistan.

The blast, which struck the Jawadia mosque in Herat, coincided with evening prayers.

Officials believe there were here were at least two attackers - one a suicide bomber, and another who shot at worshippers with a firearm.
