Egypt's Minister of Social Solidarity Ghada Wali has announced that pensions will be available at ATMs starting 1 September for the six million citizens who hold pension credit cards, who represent 79 percent of pensioners in Egypt, state news agency MENA reported.
Many pensioners had asked that the payments be disbursed before the Eid holiday – which starts 31 September – though the ministry had said this would violate the law regulating pensions, which states that pension payments are not to be disbursed before the end of each month.
The Eid holiday falls on a different date each year as it is determined by the Islamic lunar calendar.
The pension payments will be available at all ATMs belonging national banks, which amount to over 8,000 ATMs nationwide, MENA added.
The minister added that direct cash payments will also be available at post and social insurance offices starting 3 September.
