Egypt's Prime minister Sherif Ismail issued an order on Sunday revoking the nationality of three Egyptian citizens for taking Israeli citizenship without a permit, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.
According to the decree, which was issued in the Official Gazette on Sunday, the three citizens did not apply for a permit from Egypt's interior ministry, a requirement for any Egyptian citizen seeking to acquire another nationality according to the Egyptian constitution.
Article 16 of the current constitution gives the prime minister the right to strip citizens their Egyptian nationality if they violate the constitution and the law by taking foreign citizenship without interior ministry authorisation.
The same article also stipulates that the prime minister has the right to annul the nationality of any citizen who does military service in any foreign country without receiving permission from Egypt's defence ministry.
The Egyptian government frequently strips Egyptians of their citizenship for taking foreign citizenship without permission from the interior ministry.
