Egypt's Prime Minister Sherif Ismail will attend a ceremony at the Giza Plateau on Thursday celebrating the official launch of 4G services for the country's four mobile network operators.

In 2016, the government sold four 4G licenses as part of a plan to reform the telecom sector and raise dollars for stretched government finances.

The fourth generation of mobile technology (4G) succeeds 3G by providing higher speed internet access for mobile devices.

According to the 2016 Speedtest market report, Egypt ranks 146 out of 150 countries in terms of internet connectivity speed.

The average internet speed in Egypt for fixed connectivity is about 1.7 Mbps, while South Korea ranked first at an average 20.5 Mbps, according the 2017 Global Overview report from We Are Social.

Mobile internet subscriptions in Egypt reached 27.3 million in July 2016, according to the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.

There are currently four mobile operators in Egypt: Orange, Vodafone Egypt, Etisalat Misr, and the newly launched Telecom Egypt’s WE.
