Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi has thanked Saudi Arabia for supporting Egyptian candidate Moushira Khattab in voting for the new UNESCO director-general on Saturday.

El-Sisi made the comments in a photo-call with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman, Saudi press agency SPA reported.

According to SPA, the Egyptian president told Bin Salman that Saudi Arabia was among the top supporters of Egypt in the region and the world.

Moushira Khattab, a former minister of family and population, lost her bid for the UNESCO chief position on Friday.

She lost to French candidate Audrey Azoulay, who was elected after an unusually heated four-round race.

Khattab was among the top candidates in the race, along with France Audrey's Azoulay and Qatar's Hamad Bin Abdulaziz El-Kawari.
