Egypt's interior ministry said police killed gunmen who were attempting to attack security as they guarded a coastal highway in the North Sinai capital city of Al-Arish late on Wednesday.
Five gunmen in a pickup truck opened fire on the security forces who subsequently returned fire, killing two attackers and injuring another, the ministry said in a statement on its official Facebook page on Thursday.
Two other gunmen fled into the nearby desert, the ministry added.
Security forces were combing the area to track the perpetrators.
