jared New frigate from South Korea arrives at Egypt's naval base

A frigate ship presented by the government of South Korea to Egypt arrived at the Alexandria naval base on Thursday, the Egyptian military said.

The 'Egypt Youth' corvette was gifted to Egypt as part of wider efforts to bolster military relations between the two countries' armed forces and to boost mutual cooperation in all fields, the military said in a statement.

During the ship's voyage to Egypt, a joint military drill was conducted between Egyptian naval forces and their South Korean and Indian allies.

The warship is the latest in a series of acquisitions which officials say are aimed at enhancing the combat and technical efficiency of Egypt's naval forces and helping to bolster the country's national security.

Last week, the first of four Gowind 2500 corvettes ordered by Egyptian Navy from France, and a second Type-209/1400 submarine from Germany, arrived at the same naval base in Alexandria.

Thursday's corvette has various calibers of artillery guns and can launch torpedoes and deep-sea missiles.

It has a range of 4,500 nautical miles (8,334 kilometers) at 32 knots and is capable of carrying 1,240 tons.

Egypt's navy, the largest in the Middle East and North Africa, is tasked with protecting over 2,000 km of the country's coastline in the Mediterranean and Red Seas.
