Protesters burned US and Israeli flags on the steps of Egypt's Journalists Syndicate in Cairo on Thursday in a demonstration against US President Donald Trump's decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and move the US embassy to the city.

The protesters, who numbered in the dozens, chanted slogans against the Israeli occupation and the US and in support of Palestine, Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Security forces cordoned off the area where the syndicate in located in downtown Cairo while the protest was underway.

The protesters chanted: "Generation after generation, we consider you an enemy, Israel,” and "Jerusalem is Arab."

The syndicate had issued a statement earlier on Thursday condemning the decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of the "racist Israeli state."

"The decision gravely undermines peace efforts and entirely destroys peace efforts in the Middle East,” the statement read.

Egypt has also condemned the US decision to move the embassy and asked jointly with Bolivia and six other UN member nations for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the US decision, which Trump announced in a speech on Wednesday.
