Egypt's health ministry said in a statement on Wednesday that 13 people were killed and three were injured when a bus collided with a truck on a desert road in Beni Suef governorate, 120km south of Cairo.
In 2015, Egypt registered 25,500 road fatalities, with a total of 14,500 road accidents, according to a study published by official statistics body CAPMAS in August 2016.
The high rate of accidents is often attributed to poorly maintained infrastructure and loosely enforced traffic regulations.
In 2014, the Egyptian Ministry of Transportation allocated EGP 8 billion to develop 365km of the country’s road network and add an opposite direction for 450km of one-way roads.
