Governor Hesham Abdel Baset is facing charges for reportedly accepting a bribe of EGP2 million from a businessman

Egypt's state security prosecutors have ordered the detention for four days of the governor of Menoufiya along with two businessmen on bribery charges.

Governor Hesham Abdel Baset was arrested on Sunday and faces charges of "requesting and receiving sums of money as bribery."

A source at the Administrative Control Authority (ACA), the country's anti-corruption body, told Ahram Arabic earlier this week that the authority has voice recordings confirming that the governor received a EGP2 million bribe (approximately $113,000) from a businessman to illegally allocate a plot of land to the latter.

The two other men, the businessman and his partner, face charges of "offering a bribe to a state employee."

An order has been issued for the detention of the trio for four days pending investigations.

ACA is in charge of fighting corruption and enforcing laws and regulations within state bodies.

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi had stressed the country's efforts to combat corruption, urging that those involved in wrongdoing must be held accountable.
