Egyptian military prosecution issued on Tuesday a media gag order on covering investigations into former army chief of staff and presidential hopeful Sami Anan after the army accused him of breaching military regulations by running for office without permission.
Anan's campaign organisers said he has been arrested and that he called off his presidential bid shortly after the army accused him of incitement against the military and forging official documents to run for the presidency.
The army said he committed "a serious breach" military service laws by running for the election. As a military officer who the army says is still on its reserve list, Anan was required to end his service and seek authorization by the army before seeking office.
The ban on media coverage includes all outlets: print, broadcast and online, and will remain in effect until investigations are completed, a statement from the military prosecution said.
