Al-Azhar grand imam meets Saudi crown prince, discusses counter-terrorism efforts

Sheikh Ahmed El-Tayeb, the grand imam of Egypt's Al-Azhar – the world's foremost institution of Sunni Islamic learning – met with Saudi Crown prince Mohammed bin Salman in Cairo on Monday afternoon.

During their meeting at Al-Azhar headquarters the two men discussed ways of boosting cooperation between Al-Azhar and Saudi Arabia, especially in the area of counter-terrorism efforts, according to Al-Ahram Arabic news website.

El-Tayeb and Bin Salman also discussed ways of countering religious extremism in general, among other pressing topics.

The Saudi crown prince is in Egypt on a three-day visit that started on Sunday. It is his first foreign visit since being appointed as crown prince.

On Tuesday, he will join Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi in inaugurating the 1,000-year-old Al-Azhar Mosque following the completion of three years of renovation work.
