Egypt's Court of Cassation orders retrial for 8 defendants in Waraq terrorist cell case

Ahram Online , Tuesday 10 Apr 2018

Egypt’s Court of Cassation overturned on Tuesday death sentences and jail terms and ordered a retrial for defendants previously convicted in the “Waraq terrorist cell” case.

The court ordered the retrial after reviewing appeals filed by eight of the defendants, who had been sentenced to verdicts ranging from five-year prison terms, life imprisonment and death sentences.

The defendants will be retried in a different criminal court district.

Tuesday’s ruling comes more than one year after a Giza criminal court sentenced two of the defendants to death, two to life imprisonment, and four to five-year terms.

The defendants were convicted of joining an outlawed group, killing a policeman and a civilian, and possessing weaponry in Waraq district, northern Giza in February 2016.
