In an attempt to fight sexual harassment on Egypt's public transportation, a number of the country's ministries along with foreign and local NGOs launched on Monday a new public awareness campaign against sexual harassment in the country.

The campaign was launched by Egypt's ministries of investment and international cooperation, youth and sport, transportation, the national council for women, as well as the French Agence Francaise de developpement, Germany's GIZ, and USAID.

The campaign includes social media awareness videos featuring a number of popular Egyptian public figures.

The first video clip in the campaign #SpeakUp was released on Monday and features popular Egyptian actress Menna Shalaby and singer Hany Adel.

Produced by social media start-up Bassita, the campaign is mostly funded by private real estate developer SODIC.

According to a number of surveys, the vast majority of Egyptian women have reported suffering from various forms of sexual harassment.

Sexual harassment was criminalised in Egypt in 2014.

The law imposes jail terms of no less than six months and double the sentence for repeated offenders, and/or fines of EGP 3,000 to EGP 5,000 ($419 to $700) on those found guilty of sexual harassment.
