Freedom and Justice Party’s (FJP) chairman Mohamed Morsi announced during a press conference held at the party’s headquarters on Monday that FJP Secretary Saad El-Katatni will be nominated as speaker of the new parliament.

Another name that was on the table for the position of speaker was FJP vice president Essam El-Erian.

With less than a week before the parliament's first session, negotiations have been underway among political forces of the parliament with regard to their nominees for the positions of speaker of the parliament and two deputy speakers.

The first session of the first post-Mubarak parliament is scheduled to be held on 23 January with the FJP-led Democratic Alliance winning 233 seats, accounting for almost 45 per cent of the parliament.
