Egypt's foreign ministry has launched a media campaign to raise awareness of the country’s chairing of the African Union in 2019, a statement by the foreign ministry read.

The campaign, launched with a Facebook page and a section on the ministry’s website, aims at highlighting the priorities of the AU agenda, action plans as well as the development agenda 2063.

It also aims to frame Egypt's "comprehensive and ambitious" programme of activities and events for the AU.

"Egypt reiterates its willingness to mobilise its potential and expertise to advance common African action towards wider horizons, and its keenness to reaching tangible outcomes that respond to the needs of African countries and peoples," the statement read.

The new Facebook page, titled in Arabic "Egypt's Chairmanship of the African Union" has translations in English and French.

President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi will take over the chairmanship of the African Union for this year on 10 February, after being elected by African leaders last year.

The outgoing chair is Rwandan President Paul Kagame.

Chairmanship of the AU rotates on an annual basis between the continental grouping’s five regions: north, south, east, west and central Africa.
