Several hundred protesters gathered in Suez's Arbaeen Square after Friday prayers to demand that the ruling military council – which they hold responsible for the deaths of 74 people at a football match in Port Said on Wednesday – hand over power to a civilian authority.
Furthermore, groups of Ultras – hardcore football fans – have protested in front of the Suez security directorate and provincial administrative headquarters.
The deaths of two protesters in the city on Thursday have further aggravated the tense atmosphere.
Protesters chanted "down with military rule" and "down with the Field Marshal."
Gunshots were heard in the city during coverage of the protests by ONTV, an independent satellite channel. The source of the gunshots is unknown.
A local Suez MP, the Muslim Brotherhood's Abbas Abdel-Aziz, told private satellite channel CBS by telephone that the protesters were angry that a Suez man had been killed in the Port Said disaster.
The Suez security directorate headquarters remains the main flashpoint in the city. Earlier today, military and security forces returned to the city's security directorate and provincial administration headquarters. The two complexes were evacuated on 25 January 2012, the first anniversary Egypt's 2011 revolution.
According to the health ministry, two protesters were killed on Thursday during clashes in Suez and one in Cairo. The ministry also reports 1,690 injuries.
The first casualties of the January uprising that toppled former president Hosni Mubarak were in the canal city.
