Egyptian authorities uncover four Egypt-Gaza tunnels

Four tunnels used for smuggling have been found on Egypt's border with besieged Gaza

The Egyptian authorities declared Saturday that four tunnels connecting Egypt to Gaza and though which goods, diesel fuel, gasoline and building materials were being smuggled, have been uncovered.

No smugglers were arrested, but police are currently guarding the tunnels, which will eventually be destroyed, sources say.

Israel has been imposing a strict siege on Gaza since 2006, which Gazans defied by resorting to underground smuggling.

Israel has criticised Egypt for not doing more to combat the smuggling while local and international criticism has been directed at Egypt for upholding the siege on Gaza.
