Egypt welcomes the constitutional declaration agreement signed in Sudan between the Transitional Military Council and protest leaders, the Egyptian foreign ministry said in a statement on Sunday.

"This agreement is an important step on the right path towards achieving security and stability in [Sudan] and meeting the aspirations of the Sudanese people with its different segments and state institutions, as they are responsible for achieving these aspirations," the statement said.

The statement asserted that Egypt fully supports the Sudanese people.

Sudan's Transitional Military Council and protest leaders Sunday signed a hard-won constitutional declaration that paves the way for a transition to civilian rule following more than seven months of often deadly street rallies.

The agreement, signed at a ceremony in Khartoum, builds on a landmark 17 July power-sharing deal that stipulates that a joint civilian-military ruling body is to oversee the formation of a transitional civilian government and parliament to govern during a three-year transitional period.

"The steps taken by our brothers in Sudan in the past few days, at the top of which is the constitutional declaration agreement as well as the agreement to form a civilian government made of independent national figures, assert that Sudan has returned to the constitutional path, which will lead to the lifting of the suspension of Sudan's membership in the African Union," the Egyptian foreign ministry’s statement said.

The African Union Peace and Security Council suspended the participation of Sudan in all African Union activities in June until the effective establishment of a civilian-led transitional authority.

Egypt currently chairs the African Union.

The Egyptian foreign ministry called on the international community to support Sudan and the aspirations of its people to achieve peace, stability and prosperity.
