The former chief of the general staff of the Egyptian armed forces, Lt. General Sami Anan, was released on Sunday after being jailed for nearly two years.
Anan was sentenced to six years in prison in January for forgery and for running for president, which was against military rules. He was also handed a three-year jail term for inciting against the military on the social media.
Sami Anan's lawyer Nasser Amin said that the general’s legal team has not received the official legal reason behind his release.
"We do not know yet if it was a medical release or a pardon, but you can consider it a medical release, since Lt. General Anan spent his imprisonment at Maadi military hospital due to the condition of his health," Amin told Ahram Online.
Anan’s secretary Mostafa El-Shall tweeted a photo of him and Anan in Cairo on Sunday evening.
