Egypt has won membership in the African Union’s (AU) Peace and Security Council for 2020-2022, foreign ministry spokesman Ahmed Hafez said on Friday.

Hafez said Egypt had won a majority in the first round of voting on the membership.

"This comes under continued efforts to bolster peace and security in the continent," Hafez said on Twitter on the vote, which took place during Addis Ababa-hosted Executive Council meetings of the African Union.

Meetings of the Ordinary Session of the AU Executive Council continue on Friday under the chairmanship of Egypt's Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry.

The African Union pre-summit meetings are being held from 6 to 7 February in the Ethiopian capital, and will be followed by a summit meeting for African leaders from 9 to 10 February.
