Twelve Egyptians were detained by Syrian authorities for illegal entry into the country, the foreign affairs ministry of Egypt announced in a statement on Monday.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs received a report from Mahmoud Omar, charge d’affaires in the Egyptian embassy in Damascus, informing them of the detention of 12 Egyptian nationals, who had entered Syria illegally from neighbouring Lebanon.
According to the ministry's statement, they are currently working with the Syrian authorities in order to release the 12 and deport them to Egypt.
There is at present no ambassador at the Egyptian embassy in Damascus as he was recalled on 19 February in protest against the ongoing violent crackdown by Syria's regime on pro-democracy demonstrations.
