The French embassy in Cairo said on Friday that a previous video statement by the ambassador had been “misinterpreted.”

In a Thursday video message, Ambassador Stephane Romatet addressed the French community in Egypt, telling its members that the embassy was working 24/7 to support them, and that Egypt may see difficult times like other countries if the numbers of coronavirus cases increases.

The video message went viral on Thursday as some social media users in Egypt shared it.

"Part of the ambassador's statements have been misinterpreted and misrepresented for polemical purposes, and they do not reflect at all the spirit of full solidarity that France adopts with Egypt, which was expressed in particular through this video," read the Friday statement.
