An Egyptian MP, Sherine Farag, has tested positive for the coronavirus, the health ministry announced on Tuesday.

Farag, a member of the House of Representatives’ African affairs committee, has been quarantined at Cairo's Kasr El-Einy hospital, the health ministry's preventive medicine department told the parliament’s general secretariat.

All MPs who had come into contact with Farag have been told to undergo 14-day home isolation.

Farag, an assistant professor of medical engineering, is one of 28 MPs who were appointed to the house by presidential decree in 2015.

The parliament resumed sessions on 29 April after more than a month of suspension over coronavirus fears.

Egypt has reached 10,093 confirmed coronavirus cases, including 544 deaths. The first case in the country was detected in February.
