Egypt detected 338 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, reporting a total infection tally of 10,431 since the outbreak in mid-February, the health ministry announced.

The ministry also reported 12 new deaths, bringing the total deaths from the virus to 556

The statement said that 160 patients have been discharged, bringing the total number of recoveries to 2,486.

Health ministry spokesman Khaled Megahed said in the statement that the number of people whose test results have turned from positive to negative, including the 2,486 recoveries, has now reached 2,980.

Despite lockdown measures imposed in March to contain the spread of the virus, Egypt’s infection tally has continued to surge, recording over 10,000 infections in less than three months.

The first case of COVID-19 in Egypt was confirmed on 14 February, and though it took seven weeks to reach the milestone of 1,000 infections on 4 April, it has taken just three days to move from 7,000 to 8,000, and three days to reach 10,000 from 9,000 this month.
