Jordan stressed on Sunday its support to Egypt in face of any threat to its security and stability along its borders with neighboring Libya, a statement by the Egyptian foreign ministry read.
According to the statement, Egyptian foreign minister Sameh Shoukry received a phone call from Jordanian counterpart Ayman Safadi, where they exchanged viewpoints over several regional issues of common interest, including the Libyan crisis and the Palestinian cause.
On Libya, Safadi said Egypt’s security is of Jordan’s security as a pillar for security and stability in the region, the statement read, adding that the two ministers agreed on the importance of supporting all efforts for a political reconciliation in Libya at the earliest opportunity.
Such a settlement would preserve Libya’s unity and territorial integrity and paves the way for the return of security and stability under the outcomes of Berlin Conference and Cairo Declaration, the statement added.
The two ministers stressed the necessity of a ceasefire and undertaking necessary measures to avert the worsening of the crisis, making Libya a field for regional and international conflicts.
Both ministers also affirmed their unwavering stance on rejecting any unilateral measures on the annexation of parts in occupied Palestinian lands due to its violation of international law andbecause it undermines chances of accomplishing fair and aspired peace.
They stressed on their stance in retrieving legitimate Palestinian rights based upon international law decisions and the Arab Peace Initiative.
The phone call also tackled faltering Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) negotiations, where Shoukry presented developments on the crisis and the latest move to the UN Security Council due amid the collapse of talks due to Addis Ababa’s intransigent positions.
The Jordanian minister stressed on the importance of Ethiopia not taking any unilateral measures on the filling of the dam and the necessity of reached an agreement that preserves Egypt’s rights in the Nile and other parties’ rights under the international law.
