Egypt’s Alexandria prosecution ordered on Saturday that policemen be stationed at Palm Beach in Agami, one day after 11 people drowned after illegally accessing the beach, which was shut down as part of anti-coronavirus measures.

The prosecution also summoned the beach’s management for questioning to determine how the beachgoers were able to access the site despite the shutdown.

On Friday, 10 people drowned as they attempted to save a child who swam into the sea at dawn, the Central Administration for Tourism and Resorts said.

The group went to the beach at dawn in an attempt to avoid police, who would otherwise prevent would-be beachgoers from accessing the beach.

Nine bodies have been recovered, and a search is underway to find the two remaining victims.

Egypt’s beaches have been closed since March over the coronavirus pandemic, despite a gradual reopening of vital sectors and activities, including restaurants, coffee shops and malls.

Over 60 of Alexandria’s beaches continue to be closed under measures to prevent crowding to stem the spread of the virus in the country.
