Egypt's Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) said Monday it registered a 9.4 percent increase in fire incidents countrywide through 2019 compared to the rate in 2018.
As many as 50,662 incidents were recorded in Egypt during 2019, compared to 46,323 recorded in 2018, Egypt's official statistics agency said.
The statement added that 49.4 percent of the incidents were the result of negligence, 45.5 percent were caused by adventitious factors, while 5.1 percent were set deliberately.
The statement added that Cairo witnessed the highest number of fires, with 7,114 incidents, followed by Alexandria at 3,516 incidents. North Sinai had the lowest number of fire incidents with only 72.
Fires claimed the lives of 252 people, including three firefighters, and injured 1,203 others, including 54 firefighters.
