A girl died and 41 were injured in Upper Egypt’s Qena when a bus crashed into a vehicle early on Saturday.

Ambulance vehicles transferred the injured to hospitals in Qena.

Passengers of the ill-fated bus were travelling on the Qena-Luxor road in southern Egypt after celebrating the Coptic feast of Mar Guiris in Qena when the incident took place.

Authorities are investigating the accident.

Deadly road accidents take place on a near-daily basis in Egypt.

However, Egyptian Planning Minister Hala El-Said said late in October that road deaths fell to 7,000 in 2020, down from 12,000 last year and 13,000 the year before.

She attributed the drop in road deaths to increased spending on road and bridge projects.

Road investments increased to EGP 28 billion in 2020, up from EGP 26 billion in 2019 and EGP 14 billion in 2018, she noted.
