Egypt condemned on Tuesday the Israeli plans to build thousands of settlement units in Jerusalem, the Egyptian foreign ministry said.

“Egypt condemned the announcement by the Israeli authority of a plan to build nearly 8,300 new settlement units in the city of Jerusalem, as this considered a new violation of international laws and related UN Security Council resolutions,” Egyptian foreign ministry spokesperson Ahmed Hafiz said.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Israeli government approved a plan to construct 8,300 settlement units in seized Palestinian land in South Jerusalem, according to official Palestinian news agency WAFA.

Egypt has maintained its position of rejecting illegal settlements in Palestinian territories as well as its full support for a establishing a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital based on the borders of 1967.

Egypt recently held talks with Western diplomats to discuss reviving the Middle East peace process.
