The Egyptian Armed Forces has disinfected several crowded areas in Downtown Cairo as part of its plan to provide support to various state bodies in curbing the spread of coronavirus infections amid the second wave of the pandemic.

According to an official statement on Friday by the Armed Forces Spokesman Tamer El-Refaie, sterilisation operations were carried out in the usually busy Tahrir Complex and surrounding areas in Tahrir Square.

El-Refaie added that the central public transport hubs of Abdel-Moneim Riad near Tahrir Square and Ahmed Helmy near Ramsis Square were also sterilised.

The busy underground metro stations of Anwar El-Sadat in Tahrir Square and Martyrs station in Ramsis Square were also disinfected, added El-Refaie.

Sterilisation was also carried out in Mahtat Misr, Egypt's main train station in Ramsis Square, which receives millions of passengers daily.

The spokesperson said the Armed Forces was keen on using the most modern disinfectant and sterilising equipment in its operations.

The disinfection operations were carried out in the late hours of the night to ensure that the targeted areas were clear of citizens and that traffic was not disrupted, he expalined.

The sterilisation operations come as part of the Armed Forces’ plan to provide support to various state bodies in facing the spread of infections amid the second wave, El-Refaie added.

Egypt entered the second wave of the pandemic in the last week of December after the country started  recording double the number of infections daily compared to previous months.

The government has recently taken a number of measures to curb the spread of the virus such as levying immediate fines on thousands of citizens who violate mask mandates, and cracking down on cafes and restaurants that violate preventative measures.

The government has also cancelled attendance for students in schools and universities and postponed mid-term exams, and reintroduced reduced-employees shift rotations in various agencies.
