Egypt reported 669 new coronavirus cases and 53 fatalities on Monday, a statement by the Egyptian health ministry said.
The country’s total infection tally reached 162,486, while the death toll hit 9,012 since the outbreak began domestically in mid-February.
The statement added that 504 patients have been discharged after recovering from the virus, bringing the total number of recoveries to 127,001.
Egypt is currently waiting for new batches of coronavirus vaccines to expand the access of the inoculations to more categories. Vaccination of frontline healthcare workers has started since Sunday.
However, Egyptian officials asked the citizens to take all their precautionary measures even after receiving the vaccine to contain the spread of the pandemic’s second wave.
The country entered a second wave of the pandemic in last week of December, nearly five months after reported noticeable daily lower infection and death tolls.
Daily coronavirus infection tolls registered by the Egyptian health ministry have been on the decline since 9 January.
The decline comes following almost three weeks recording more than 1000 cases daily.
