Egypt's health ministry reported 603 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, bringing the total infection tally to 171,993 since the outbreak began domestically last year.
The ministry also reported 53 new deaths over the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths from the virus to 9,857.
The statement said that 376 patients have been discharged after recovering from the virus, bringing the total number of recoveries to 133,707.
Egypt entered the second wave of the pandemic in December, but the daily infection rate has been on the wane since the second week of January.
However, the past five days witnessed a slight increase in infections. The lowest daily infection toll, since 24 December, was recorded on Saturday with 509 positive cases.
Unlike infection tallies, daily death tolls have been ranging between 40 and 50 for the second month in a row.
Egypt’s Minister of Health Hala Zayed told the World Health Organization in a virtual meeting on Thursday that the number of coronavirus infections in Egypt is expected to increase by April, but the curve will decline in May.
