Arab foreign ministers agreed on Wednesday on renewing Arab League (AL) Secretary-General Ahmed Abul-Gheit's five-year term.

Egypt's state-owned news agency MENA quoted on Wednesday an Arab diplomatic source who confirmed that Arab foreign ministers unanimously agreed to Cairo's request to renew Abul-Gheit's mandate.

This came during the consultative meeting that precedes the opening session of the 155th regular session of the AL Summit at the ministerial level, which begins later on Wednesday.

On 30 January, Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi sent messages to Arab leaders expressing Cairo’s intention to re-nominate Abul-Gheit, looking forward to the Arab leaders’ support for the nomination in accordance with the provisions of the AL’s Charter.

Abul-Gheit, 78, will end his current five-year tenure in June 2021.

He succeeded former Egyptian AL secretary-general Nabil El-Arabi.

Abul-Gheit, a career diplomat, served as foreign minister for Egypt from July 2004 to March 2011.

Since the establishment of the AL in 1945, the position of secretary-general has been held by Egypt, except for the period from 1979 to 1990.
