Egypt, France conduct naval drills in Red Sea

The exercise is meant to enhance bilateral military cooperation and maintain regional security and stability

The Egyptian and French naval forces conducted a drill in the Southern Fleet zone at the Red Sea base, Egypt’s Armed Forces stated on Monday.

Taking part in the naval exercise was the Egyptian frigate Sharm El-Sheikh and the corvette Abu Qir as well as the French assault helicopter carrier Tonnerre and the frigate Surcouf following their visit to Safaga Port.

The joint exercise is part of the Armed Forces’ strategy to “upgrade exercises and exchange expertise with the armed forces of friendly countries,” read the army’s statement.

The drill aims to enhance bilateral military cooperation and support efforts to maintain maritime security and stability in the region, the statement added.

The exercise included assorted maritime formations, dealing with different threats, protecting vital target in the sea, air defence drills, and helicopter landing on vessel decks.
