Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi has issued directives to increase the salaries of all state employees and raise the monthly minimum wage, according to a statement by presidential spokesman Bassam Rady.
The president has ordered the earmarking of EGP 37 billion in the draft budget for 2021/22 to increase salaries as well as to raise the minimum wage from EGP 2,000 to EGP 2,400.
El-Sisi issued the directives during a meeting on Monday with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Finance Minister Mohamed Maait, where they reviewed the new draft budget for fiscal year 2021/22.
The president ordered granting employees covered by the civil service law a 7.5 percent periodical salary bonus, and granting employees not covered by the law a one-time bonus that is 13 percent of their basic salaries, read the statement.
During the meeting, the president also instructed the government to approve a 13 percent increase to pensions at a total cost of EGP 31 billion, the statement added.
A financial incentive totalling EGP 1.5 billion will also be allocated for state employees who will be transferred to the country's New Administrative Capital, which is set to house various public agencies by the end of this year.
El-Sisi also called for promoting employees who meet the requirements for promotion by 30 June 2021 – at a total cost of EGP 1 billion – one day before the new budget is set to go into force.
During the meeting, the finance minister said that the new draft targets growth of 9 percent, a 6.6 percent total deficit reduction and an initial budget surplus of 1.5 percent.
